The Benefits Of
Recycling Fridges & Freezers With Us

How Are Fridges Recycled?

Collection & Transportation

We provide a reliable collection service for fridges and freezers, using our own vehicles for compliant handling. Once collected, units are taken to one of our depots before being transferred to our specialist recycling partner for processing. Larger commercial refrigeration units may be sent directly here to streamline the process and minimise unnecessary transport.

Prepration & Degassing

Before recycling begins, each fridge or freezer must be carefully prepared to remove potentially harmful substances. Specialist equipment is used to extract refrigerant gases and oils from the cooling system, preventing environmental damage and ensuring compliance with hazardous waste regulations. Once this step is complete, the appliances are ready for safe mechanical processing.

Shredding & Reprocessing

After degassing, the units are mechanically shredded into smaller parts to allow for the separation of different materials. Metals, plastics, and insulating foam are recovered and sorted for further recycling. This process maximises resource recovery, ensuring that valuable materials are put back into the supply chain while reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions

We accept all types of commercial and industrial fridge freezers, including upright, chest, display, and walk-in models. If you have any specific concerns about your equipment, please contact us for more details.

Fridges and freezers are WEEE (Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment) that are hazardous. This is because of substances that fridges contain, which can cause harm to human health and the environment. Fridges and freezers contain various materials that can be recycled, however, including plastics and metals.

After collection, the fridge freezers are transported to a recycling facility, where they are carefully dismantled. Hazardous materials, such as refrigerants and oils, are safely removed and disposed of. The remaining materials, such as metals and plastics, are then sorted and recycled.

To prepare your fridge freezer for collection, please ensure it is empty of all contents and securely disconnected from any power sources. If possible, clean the unit to avoid any spillage during transportation.

As fridges and freezers are classified as hazardous waste, you must ensure you obtain the proper disposal documentation. Our team can provide you with a digital hazardous waste consignment note. This includes information on the waste producer, waste carrier and final authorised treatment and recycling facility.

The collection and disposal charge will depend on various factors, including location, volume of waste and the type and weight of your equipment. Please contact our team including this information, and we will be in touch with a quote.
